Multiethnic state Iran - Without equality and freedom of belief

Ethnic Composition of Iran

  • Iran has 71 mio. inhabitants, of whom 40% are Persian
  • Almost all Persians are Shiite Moslem: Persian is the official language
  • Furthermore there are a lot of ethnic minorities living in Iran
  • Because they are not-Persian or not-Shiite, or both, they have to suffer from discrimination, oppression and persecution

 

  • Abduction, torture and assassinations are frequent
  • Against some minorities, the gouvernment initiated smear campaigns
  • Death sentence is an often used deterrent against political active people

Aseri - second-class citizens

  • 15-20 million Aseri (Azerbaijani) live in Iran
  • They are Shiite, like the Persian, but speak a Turkish language
  • Their language is not approved in kindergartens, schools, and universities
          > They have no possibility to share their identity with the next generation         

 

Kurds - Not acknowledged as people

  • About 10 million Kurds are living in Iran

  • They are not recognized as autonomous people with their own history, language and culture

  • Kurdish political parties are forbidden;
             their memers are persecuted,
             tortured or executed

  • Many Kurdish activists have been killed by the iranian regime abroad

  • Because Kurds are mostly Sunnite, they also have to suffer from religious persecution
             > Forced conversion

  • Many of their cleric leaders have already been killed

Ahwazi - In deep poverty

  • The number of Ahwazi is 4.5 million

  • This Arab ethnic group is living in deep poverty in Khuzestan, most of them are illiterates

  • In the slums of the Ahwazi there is no...

        -  Public transport
       -  Sanitary equipment
       -  Electricity
       -  Schools
       -  Hospitals

Baluchi - Systematically neglected

  • About 2.4 million Beluchis are living in Iran, most of whom belong to the Sunnite Islam

  • Systematic discrimination by the government:
                    -  Their language is not acknowledged
                    -   Access to governmental offices is refused
                    -   Their area of settlement is neglected

  • Due to this discrimination, they are suffering from high unemployement rates

  • Frequently, political activists are randomly arrested and executed

Turkmen - evermore discriminated

  • The 2 million Turkmen, living in Iran, are Sunnite

  • They are living alongside the Border to Turkmenistan

  • Since the foundation of the Ialamic Republic, discrimination against them is getting stronger

  • They are prevented from the practice of their culture, language and religion

  • Unemployement amongst Turkmen is about 40%, which is triply the national average

Baha'i - Defamed and persecuted

  • About 300.000 members of the Baha'i religion are living in Iran, where their Religion has its origin

  • The Iranian government blames them on blasphemy and does not recognize them as denomination

  • The purposeful Marginalization of the Baha'i is legally prescribed since 1991 ("Golpaygani - Dekret,,)

Zoroastrian - Converts, because of pressure

  • There are about 300.000 Zoroastrian living in Iran

  • Officially, they are allowed to practice their religion in freedom

  • They are however discriminated work-related:
    They have no access to higher educational institutes, Public authorities and teaching professions

Assyrian - Exodus nearly accomplished

  • The Assyrians belong to the Christian-Assyrian Church of the Orient

  • Main region of settlement is the region of Urmiye in the north-west of Iran

* The religious minority of
mandaeans comprises about 1.000 - 5.000 members
