Press Release: Brutal Attack by Albanian Police on Camp Ashraf-3

June 21, 2023

The brutal attack by the Albanian police on Camp Ashraf-3 raises serious concerns regarding the respect for fundamental human rights and international treaties.

On June 20, 2023, a force consisting of approximately 1000 Albanian police officers conducted an unexpected raid on Camp Ashraf-3, resulting in extensive destruction of property and severe injuries among the residents.

During this attack, numerous doors, closets, and equipment were destroyed, and many computers were seized. The police officers deployed tear gas and pepper spray, inflicting physical and psychological suffering on residents who posed no immediate threat.

We deeply lament the tragic loss of one of the camp’s inhabitants during this attack, and we express our solidarity with over 100 individuals who have been injured, some in critical condition.

These attacks on Iranian refugee camps in Albania are unacceptable and a direct violation of the security and health guarantees provided by the United Nations and the United States to the residents of Ashraf-3.

We call upon the United Nations, the United States, the European Union, and the international community as a whole to exert diplomatic pressure on Albania to ensure that such illegal and violent acts do not recur in the future. The perpetrators of this attack must be held accountable for their actions, and measures should be taken to guarantee the safety, health, and well-being of the residents of Camp Ashraf-3 and all refugees in Albania.

We remain vigilant and will continue to closely monitor the situation, firmly supporting the rights of refugees and appealing for justice and respect for human rights.
